MAKRINITSA VILLAGE

THE BALCONY OF MOUNTAIN PELION

Makrinitsa is one of the most popular destinations in Pelion, and this is not a coincidence. The lush greenery, the preservation of Pelion's unique architecture, the panoramic view of Pagasetic Gulf and Volos city and its many attractions justify its great visibility.

Built amphitheatrically on a steep west slope of Pelion, between Megalo Rema and the mountain Sarakinos, with its houses seemingly hanging from the mountain, this traditional settlement is very close to Volos city since it is only 17 km away. It has a glorious past and a rich history. The characteristic architecture of Pelion is here, as all the buildings retain the traditional local color.

MANY CHARACTERISE MAKRINITSA AS THE "BALCONY OF PELION"

A walk in the village square, in the famous "bazaar", will make you understand the cause of this characterization, from where you can admire the panoramic view of the city of Volos and the Pagasetic Gulf.

In the square you will also have the opportunity to cool off under the shade of perennial plane trees and enjoy your coffee or lunch. There is also the marble fountain "Lions" or "Immortal Water", work of 1809, with the three bronze heads of lions from which the water gushes.

There is also the marble faucet "Lions" or "Immortal Water", a work of 1809, with the three bronze heads of the lions from which the water springs. Also worth mentioning is the great fresco of the famous painter Theophilos, titled "Battle in the cold tap", which is preserved on the wall of a traditional café. The wall painting is the rest of Katsantonis immediately after the battle of Tzoumerka and dates back to 1910. The village has some famous churches, such as the church of St. John the Baptist built in 1792, located in the central square and having the wonderful stone reliefs of the folk sculptor Theodosius. Also impressive is the church of the Assumption of the Virgin, the monastery of Agios Gerasimos and the chapel of Prophet Elias.
